The Institute of Computer Software and Theory has a sub-discipline master's degree program, computer software and theory. The institute currently has 4 professors, 8 associate professors and 4 instructors, with 12 of them having doctoral degree and 8 of them having foreign research experience. People in the institute have strong scientific research background, have published many SCI and EI papers, have got the awards of many patents, and have published 5 academic books and textbooks.

Over the years, the institute has gradually established several important research directions, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, big data and the internet of things, pattern recognition, image processing, complex networks, bioinformatics, data mining and information security. The Institute has undertaken a number of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Key Programs; General Programs), the National Key Research and Development Programs of China, and the Natural Science Foundation of Gansu Province. In addition to paying attention to theoretical innovation, the institute also pays attention to practical application research, has established long-term cooperation relationship with more enterprises, and has repeatedly undertaken important research projects cooperated with enterprises and institutions.
